Yokoso Japan - Tokyo Food
I am trying to post my Tokyo trip by part, not by day.
The first part I want to share is FOOD!
Be prepared for lotsa food photos.
1. Ramen at Ueno
The first meal we touched down to Tokyo was eating Ramen! The one we had at Hokkaido was ichiban!
This ramen shop was so near to the first hotel we stay. So we decided to give it a try.
There was a vending machine install at the door. The label of each button was in Japanese. We have to order from the vending I don’t even know what to order, I simply matched the description (Japanese wording) on the food photo which stick on the wall, with the label on the button. Slot in coins/note, it will give you a receipt of your order, then pass the receipt to the waiter.
The vending machine looks something like below pictures.

(Taken at some MRT station, they have a lot of small restaurant inside the MRT exchange station.)

The whole restaurant was not big at all. Less than 5 tables, and a long bar with about 6 seats.

We ordered Ramen, and it comes with rice. Honestly, I can’t even finish the big bowl ramen.

Luckily we get what we want. The soup base was really really delicious! This is the Pork Ramen in soy sauce base - Shoyu Ramen.

The portion was really generous! My Miso Soup Ramen. Oh, I don’t really like the bean sprout in ramen.

It’s Wagyu beef burger Steak. It’s Kuroge Wagyu (黑毛和牛).

It comes to us looking like this. Still hot on plate.

Then we gotto cut the burger steak into cubes. Pour in the sauce and let it grill.

It will just cook nicely.

This is my order. Burger Steak with cheese on tip.

I opt for BBQ sauce.

The instructions of how to cook the burger steak. Can’t read Japanese, but the picture tells everything.

We stopped by Furla Cafe after walking around at Ginza for a while. Ginza was really a nice place for shopping. All the branded buildings were soooooooooooo grand and classy. Well, I will share that in future post. :p

The cafe was actually situated in Furla shop, lower ground. Together with the bags/shoes showroom.

We chinchai order 2 coffee drinks. We just want the experience. :)

Ice Latte.

I did feel good, especially the cafe was so quiet. We didn’t buy anything from Furla except 2 glasses of coffee.
4. Gucci Cafe at Ginza
This Gucci cafe also located at Ginza. Branded shops in Ginza normally own whole building. Gucci alone has got 5 floors. How can on resist to step in? Muahaha.
You know what? This Gucci shop in Ginza is the world largest Gucci store. How GLAM~
Before going Japan, Hongkiat told me about Gucci cafe. I was so excited to find out. Now, I finally made it to the Gucci cafe.

I love quiet yet classy cafe.

While waiting for our orders to arrive.

The cafe in Gucci was located at 4th Floor.

Quiet, not crowded and spacious. No kidding, world largest Gucci Store wo.

The glass is very unique. Oval shape at the bottom, round at the top.

This was the monthly special cake. Very chessy. Taste a bit like Oreo Cheesecake.

This is some fruit drinks. I’ve forgotten the name.

The menu! So glam~ We also bought the Gucci Chocolate.
This was best Unagi don that I ever had. It has Michelin rated one! HongKong food critics Choi Lan also said nice!

We did not order anything else, we come for UNAGI only. It’s 1890 Yen! It’s about SGD30 for a great Unagi Don!

A class of Unagi, grilled with special sauce. Smells really great.

Totally can’t compare with any other Unagi don. I will never eat Unagi don till I go Japan again.

6. Breakfast at Hamamatsucho Bus Terminal
We were going to Mt Fuji one day tour. So we decided to have our breakfast at the Bus Terminal before the departure time. We randomly pick one restaurant nearby.

Hongkiat’s breakfast - Japanese style breakfast. Haha. Got RICE One!

My breakfast look more tasty. American breakfast.
7. Nakamuraya Curry house at Shinjuku
Yea, you read it right. We were having curry in Japan.

Apparently, this is quite famous in Shinjuku. Not only they sell curry, they also sell pastries. Their famous cream bread is the popular one and people will need to queue for the bread.

I took a picture of the plastic sample of the curry beef omelet rice during our 15 minutes queue. Yea, no kidding. Long queue!

My Tokyo guide book that I bought from Kinokuniya.

Hongkiat’s order - Omelet Beef Rice. Not curry.

Mine - Curry Chicken rice.

Well, it was not too bad. But I prefer Malaysian Style la. More spicy!

Yummy!
bill @ 3,234 yen
8. Famous Saint Marc Cafe at Shibuya
According to my Tokyo guide book, this cafe has one famous bread - choco cro. This is famous because a lot of artists also likes to buy choco cro as souvenir.

Off coz I must try on the famous choco cro. It was really soft as what the guide book has described. The long hot dog bread also very nice. I love soft bread.

I wanted to have 2nd Choco cro but thinking I shouldn’t eat too full as there are so many other food waiting for me.
bill @ 1,050 yen
9. Saika Chinese Restaurant @ Ueno
This is just one of the random Chinese Restaurant we found around our second Hotel at Tokyo.
It was raining and we didn’t want to walk too far, hence eating at this restaurant.

Mapo Toufu.

Fried Yee Mee with vege.

Clam soup with eggs

We ordered fried rice too. All the food also very big portion.

Can’t finish everything.
bill @ 3,475 yen
10. 347 cafe at Shibuya
Another random pick of cafe. Was walking around Shibuya, this cafe was located at Shibuya 1-23-16, Picasso 347 3/4F.
Very nice ambiance with a small swimming pool. They have seats at outdoor and indoor.

Since the weather was good, we opt for outdoor table.

Just some hot dog as snack, beer and ice chocolate.
bill @ 2,600 yen
11. C’est Bon Plage at Shibuya
When we walked pass this cafe, I told Hongkiat that I want to have a drink at this PINK cafe. It was not crowded when we first passed by. By the time we return to the cafe after few hours, all the tables almost filled up liao.
I googled about this cafe, it seems like it was a crepe specialist.
“Shibuya crepe specialists C’est Bon Plage (1-16-8 Jinnan, Shibuya-ku; 03-5456-1558. Map. Directions.) have unveiled a truly tempting offer: a free bottle of wine for groups of four or more. Sure, conditions apply—you have to make reservations before you go, and you’ve got to order one dish per person—but with the lineup of authentic Brittany galettes on offer, that won’t be a problem. C’est Bon Plage’s savory buckwheat crepes are served up hot and topped with eggs, ham and a variety of other ingredients (from ¥850); a full menu of dessert crepes are also on offer (from ¥450). The restaurant’s location on Koen Dori makes it an inviting people-watching spot, and after your meal you can check out all the, er, fun at the Tobacco and Salt Museum next door.”

So many hot chics there.

Very nice open space cafe, we can ’stalk’ jap chics who walked pass at the walk way.

They have the blanket and cushion for each seat.

I randomly pick one of the crepe to try. I guess I picked something very normal.

This Torafugu restaurant was a recommendation by Kelvin, our Japan tour guide.
Fugu is also called as blowfish, pufferfish.
Fugu (河豚, 鰒, フグ) is the Japanese word for pufferfish and is also a Japanese dish prepared from the meat of pufferfish (normally species of Takifugu, Lagocephalus, or Sphoeroides) or porcupinefish of the genus Diodon. Because pufferfish is lethally poisonous if prepared incorrectly, fugu has become one of the most celebrated and notorious dishes in Japanese cuisine.
We have heard about fugu and it’s poisonous, but we would still give it a try. People has been in business for centuries and still standing strong, why should we miss the chance?
For your information, Fugu is a deadly if it’s not prepared properly. It’s expensive. It’s not something easy to be found at any Japanese restaurant, one must have license to sell Fugu.
Here at Torafugu-tei, we got the chance to try Fugu out.
We were greeted and welcome by the waitress, she brought us to a table.

We ask for an english menu and order a course of Torafugu, it includes sashimi, skin sashimi, deep fried blowfish, vege hotpot, rice porridge and dessert.
This was a one person course, but we just want to try out and did not intend to eat too much. We tried to clarify with the waitress but no one seems to understand us.

There were many procedures to eat the course.
We were first served with the skin sashimi, sashimi and deep fried blowfish.

Blow fish skin in some sauce. Mix with spring onion and some kelp.

The blow fish sashimi.

Deep fried blow fish. It was very well seasoned. It’s crispy. I can’t had enough of it.
Next course, the hot pot. Boiled the kelp (海带) in the hotpot.

Then boiled the blowfish (with bones) in order to bring out the taste of it.

You are never gonna believe how fresh the blowfish is. They were literally still moving when they were brought to us. Moving like a pumping heart. They were cut alive!

Then put in also the rest of the blowfish.

The taste of the blow fish, I’ll never forget the freshness, the taste, and very Q.
After finish the blow fish, it’s time for the vegetables.

In order not to waste the super tasty soup base after boiling the blow fish and vegetables, they cook rice porridge with the soup base.
First, the waitress put in the rice.

Then she added some salt and soy sauce.

Then she pour in the eggs.

Ta dang! The rice Porridge!

It tasted unbelievably great! I know it’s just a simple rice with eggs, but imagine the essence of blow fish and vegetables, they save the best for the last. I have never eat something simple like this and it taste like heaven.

Look at the satisfied face.

Last but not least, the dessert. One scoop of vanilla ice cream with caramel syrup.

Although this was one person course meal but both of us ate full till cannot recognize mama. I think they have prepared extra for us. Another great meal!

The outer look of Torafugu-tei.

We ate one of them! They are poisonous but we are still very much alive!
bill @ 5,490 yen
13. 66 Dining at Roppongi
Another random pick for dinner.
We saw the menu and the sample meal at the window glass of the Restaurant. We got attracted with the big portion and delicious looking burger steak.

My grilled chicken meal. I always love grilled/fried chicken.

And it came with rice. So weird.

Hongkiat’s Burger steak with egg and potato wedges.

And it also came with rice! Super weird.

I think this meal was rather normal. Normal grilled food.
bill @ 2,780
There were some other meals without pictures. We had some take away supper whenever we feel hungry.
We had Yoshinoya beef rice, McDonalds Happy meal, Ramen at the MRT exchange, Maid cafe at Akihabara etc.
It was fun experience staying at Tokyo. There were a lot of food we haven’t try out like Sushi, Udon, blah blah. We will definitely go back Tokyo.
I am still thinking what will be the next post for my Tokyo trip. Hmm..
