30-hour famine - I Survived! - Part 2

Continued from Part 1.

Fast forward to the next morning.

We were told to wake up at 6.30am and get prepared for exercise at 7.15am.

But OH BOY GIRL, women/girls in the sleeping area woke up before 6am. And kept on walk in and out, the door kept on open and close. So noisy. Urgghhhh… that’s frustrated. (This is what we learned also - Frustration.)

Without any choices, we woke up at about 6.30am and went prepared ourselves.

Everyone gathered around at the main hall as usual to receive further instructions. We were then told to go downstairs to exercise. What kind of exercise?
Exercise - Tai Chi
Yea, Tai Chi. The master of Tai Chi told us, this exercise will recharge our ‘baterry’.

After the exercise, we have a ‘Refugee Race‘. This race was interesting.

Everyone of us were refugees. Each of us was given a piece of paper listed the family name, age and role. After everyone got it, we gotto find our family and gathered around with at least 7 members before we moved on to the next task. At the end of the day, winner will be announced depends the most money, most vacinations and most food that they got during the race.

Things got crazy when the leader said “GO”. Everyone began to shout for family name , hoping to get family members gathered ASAP and went for next task.

Game - Finding Family Members in Refugee Race
Everyone was busy finding own family members

I finally got all of my family members (10 person) within 10mins, we were now ready to go for next task - applying job and earned money. As you can imagine, there were about 470++ of us rushing to the same place to apply job, the place was damn crowded and very long queue.

All queue up for jobs
Everyone not queue up for jobs intereview.

Some of us went for interviews, some of us went to look for vacinations and food. There were counters around where people queue up for free vacination and food. The camp leader will suddenly announce which counter got free food and vacinations, and there, people will just rush to the particular counter. That’s how refugees run for free food. Else, you will have to earn money and buy vacinations and food.

I experienced frustration, scare and helpless. I cant get a job, I queue up for food, but they announced the free food was over and you need money to buy food. All of sudden, i was told by the leader (they randomly pick up), I’ve infected HIV +, need to go to ‘hospital’ and suspended for 10mins.

It was almost timed and i still haven got any food, jobs, money and vacinations. My other family members has got some money, free food and vacinations. Everything added up still cant make us the winner. I heard other families has got over 100 bucks, whereas we only have 30 bucks. And now i felt disappointed also.

Basically this race wanted us to feel how the refugees felt. The frustration, the helpless condition when you infected HIV+, the urge to get a job and earn money. There was once in the middle of the race, someone shouted “who wanted to be prostitute?”, and there were actually people answered “I want!! I want!!.”

The whole scene off coz was not even close to how the refugee live, but it gave us a rough idea of how hard they gotto work and earn their living.

After the race, we were brought back to the main hall and arranged to the next talks. Yea, talks again.
Demo - Differently-abled children
Topic on Differently-abled Children. How do they climb stairs..

Blind Fold
One of the group member was blind-folded, he/she will have to listen to our instructions and walked thru the field that full with land-mines.

We were told that a lot of post-war countries were still full of land-mines. To plant land-mines was easy, but to remove them, it cost a bomb. Therefore, children at those countries were in great danger as no one know where exactly the landmines were located.

Blind Fold
But they still need to earn some living, therefore, those straws were represented as bamboo sticks, children (blind-folded) will go and collect the bamboo sticks and sell them at the market. They will listen to the instructions of other group members on how they were suppose to walk, collect the straws and keep away from land-mines.

After those talks, we were gathered again at main hall for break time. This time, we decided to play something.
Playing poker cards
Chor Tai Di

Break time ended 1 hour later. Continue with reflection time. Everyone in the group was telling us how they felt, what have they learned from the whole camp.
Reflection time

Basically, they learned a lot. Those kids in my group were all below 20. They havent seen things like this before. They didn’t even know there were street children. This camp was absolutely benefits them. As for me, generally i knew almost everything, i mean what’s happening with the kids, like child prostitue, street children, child labour etc etc , what i dont know was the statistic. But right now, i’ve seen much more and experienced the life.

Closing ceremony was simple.

William announced all the winners for the groups with highest scores (we got scores during Q & A session during the talks) and the winners for Refugee Race. Winners got special meal - Domino’s Pizza at the end of the day !

30 minutes before 6pm, organizer started to distribute muffins and soya milk to all the groups.
Distributing Muffins to all the groups

It was pretty tempting to see food infront of us and we couldn’t touch it.
Muffins and Soya Milk

After every group got the muffins, we were asked to take group picture and did a short video, which will be used as a promo video for next year’s 30-hour famine.

When everyone was trying to position themselves, i saw this guy with his cute little socks.

It was like the ‘dont worry, be happy’ kind of socks. Cute hor !?

Now everyone was exciting about the minute of breaking the fast!

We got little countdown session. Glad that things were over!

For now, as a repay for everyone who read my long and boring entry till this moment, i present to you, our leng lui group leader. She was a volunteer.
Our group Leader
She is studying in HELP now. Leng lui hor?

After eating the muffins, me and Wan Shen plan to leave the camp.

But before that, we took a picture with William. Good looking, right? But i look super duper tired and ugly! Was hoping so much to get something to cover my face.

Cely, William and Wan Shen

I wanna say thank you to

1. My mom, my aunt, my cousin, Robin (my Colleague) and syen for donating money.
2. Wan Shen for telling me this 30-hour famine, bringing me the sleeping bag and donating money.
3. Ah Moi for lending me the sleeping bag.
4. All my friends who read this.

If you noticed, i was just telling you what activities they had for the camp. The information i got from the talks was too long and so much that i could not elaborate here. I was worried that i give wrong information. So, i rather not to give any. But if you joined this camp, you definitely learned something.

In case you are interested for the upcoming 30-hour famine, you could register yourself the mailling list at World Vision Website.

Once again, thank you for reading.

30-hour famine - I Survived! - Part 1

Your weekend, Their Lives” - this was this year’s theme for the 30-hour famine camp, that i went last weekend (14 oct - 15 oct 2006).

The banner of 30-hour famine

This camp was organized by World Vision Malaysia. World Vision is a non-profit organization. The purpose of this 30-hour famine camp is to raise fund to help children in crisis. Funds raised will go to the World Vision Uzbekistan Children in Crisis Rescue Project and local children crisis programmes. The venue for the camp was at HELP Institute University College.

The participants of 30-hour famine

There were about 470++ people attended the camp compare to last year which had 260++ people. The youngest participant was only 12 years old, while the eldest was 62 years old. The 62 years old uncle was my group member. I salute him.

62 year-old Uncle and Wan Shen

The 30-hour famine started at 12pm 14 October 2006 and ended 6pm 15 October 2006. All participants registered and get the goodies bags before 11.30am. The goodies bag contains the products of some sponsors. One free t-shirt was given to each of us and will wear it for the whole 30-hour famine. 3 bottles of mineral water were given to each of us too. Then check in own luggage at the room that allocated for us.

12pm sharp. The 30-hour famine begin with a briefing and introduction to our Emcee and camp leaders.

Emcee of the camp
He is William, do you know him?

We were all assigned to groups and will stay in groups till the end.

The camp then continued with Ice Breaking Session. We were instructed to run here and there to finish the given tasks in particular time. It’s like amazing race kinda game.

Ice breaking - Wrap the egg with straws and rubberband and not to break it
We are suppose to wrap the egg with straws and rubberband, then throw it to an assigned point without breaking the egg. But… things just happen… we haven even wrap the egg, and it breaks.

After the ice breaking session, we were brought back to the main hall, where the opening ceremony begun.
I dont think you people are interested in opening ceremony, it was boring. Speech by big people, sponsors, HELP’s president ..etc etc.

But, i respect them, so… here you go. A picture of Paul Chan - HELP’s President.

After the speech, we were then shower by a lot of talks. The topics covered mostly on children, like child prostitute, child labour, poverty, differently-abled children, HIV/AIDS etc etc.

We were given break time in between the talks. We had no where to go, so, just take pictures and chit chatting around. Things seems going quite smooth and on schedule.

Alright, back to the talks. Boring talks were over. We were all divded into bigger groups for other talks. There was this particular talk, seems very interesting. The topic was on prevention (AIDS). The speaker actually did a demonstration on how to wear a condom. He was damn funny.

Caution: This is a 2-min video. It might take u long time to load. Since you already know how to wear a condom, skip this la :p

Beside that, he also demonstrated how to put on girl’s condom. Most of the people in the room did not seem to know there was actually girl’s condom. They all seems surprised, and that surprise me.
Demo on how to wear a girl's condom
Yeah, girl’s condom was actually very big in size.

We also get the chance to listen to the experience of a HIV + mother. She came and shared her story.
HIV + Mother came and share her story

The talks went on and on till 8pm. We were given another briefing that time regarding where we were going to sleep and what we can do at night.

Because 9pm onwards, we were freed. No more talks and you can either sleep or walking around the campsite. There was concert prepared for us, it started 9pm. They invited Sarimah. Pretty good. There was a movie - “Turtle can fly” arranged for us at 11.30pm too, but that was also optional.

Sarimah at the concert
Sarimah In the concert.

Me and Wan shen did not stay for the concert, as i was super headache, i need to eat panadol. Wan Shen’s friend - Chris suggested we should go to mamak stall to eat. He said he was damn hungry and he was giving up to stay overnight. Since me and Wan Shen got no where to go, we followed him.

Chris Sneak out for food !
Chris sneak out for food.

He was trying to persuade us to eat. But never succeed. I had a cup of hot milo and ate panadol. I felt better at the mamak there, because it was not crowded.

At about 11.30pm, Chris sent us back to the camp and we went straight to sleep.

The sleep area was not very big, and everyone sleep on the floor. (Like I have choices) Guy’s sleeping area was at another block. We do not sleep together.. OK?

Sleeping area
Everyone must prepare own sleeping bag, else no one willl pity you.

Since Wan shen’s friends all went home, we have extra sleeping bag for ourself. Hehehe

And there, we survived our 1st day. 12 hours of fasting. Without food and drinking only plain water. (yea i had milo, because i need to take medicine.)

We survived the 1st day
Picture taken b4 we sleep.

Stay tuned for part two. Thank you.

I got my hair perm-ed

I finally got my hair perm-ed.

It was a normal day. Normal tuesday. Yea, i took leave. Yea, i got lotsa leave… cannot? blek!

I went perming my hair together with Vivian and her BF-Roland. Just have to mention to update those old mates who yet to know.

Alright, story of the day went straight to the ’salon’ there. It was a hair college.

This college was a subsidiary business of Roland’s dad’s business. So we have got some relations to get cheaper price. Hehe

The Hair College

This college located at the boulevard building opposite Mid Valley Megamall. Since this was a college, therefore, students will be doing our hair.

First, we got our hair cut - for one hour. The student who cut our hair was their first time cutting hair. So they were slow and keep on asking their sifu (master/lecturer/tutor). But at the end, sifu was the one who cut the hair. Lucky me.

Student who cut my hair

Then they wash our hair.

After wash hair …

Then they started to perm our hair. Too many those technical terms, i dont know how to describe here.. ahahah.. poor vocab. Sorry.

The student who perm Vivian’s hair

I dont know what it called, the thing that wrap around our hair.. hahaha…
But i think we look damn funny.

After that, it was the process that put this machine to heat my hair. For about 10mins…

Heating process

All of sudden, Vivian give me this face…

The newbie pull her hair or something ? ahahha

So, i decided to notti notti about her face , I do this…

The Hair Poster.. ahahaha

Vivian start it later than me, her process was much more slower than me.

Having Fun taking picture

The whole perming process took me 4hours. You know, it was done by students, so it took longer time than those sifu. Anyway, i dont mind give them chance to try out on my hair. Although i was quite worry. Ahaha.. i only worry that they cant cut my hair.

After so long… Ta danng…. the outcome.

Vivian
